The OSTEOTEC 24-hour Fundraiser
26th 27th October
On Thursday, October 26 from 10am, Osteotec and Ortho Consulting Group will be kicking off a 24-hour challenge to complete the miles required to collectively circumnavigate and traversing Lake Malawi a total of 4146KM (2,576 miles) to raise fund for our charity partner British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH).
The team aims to complete the challenge, using three BikeERGS provided by Concept2 and a walking route around Greenham Common. We welcome anyone that would like to support and participate within the 24 hours to come along and help raise funds.
Why are we doing this?
This is our second year supporting the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH), with all proceeds from the challenge benefitting the vital work of the Lilongwe Institute of Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery (LION) project in Malawi, transforming the lives of those affected by hand trauma and disability.
Malawi is one of the world's least developed countries, with the ninth highest rate of road traffic deaths globally. For every death, there are 25 non-fatal injuries causing permanent disability which can affect whole families and lead to poverty and dependency.
The LION project is a new purpose-built healthcare facility for treating injured Malawi patients free of charge.
Launched in January 2023, the BSSH will assist LION in the delivery of treatment for elective and traumatic conditions of the hand for five years, collaborating with local staff to run specialist hand clinics and regular hand trauma and elective lists, while promoting sustainability through education and training.
We would love for this to be a successful event, so donations towards the BSSH charity are vital to be able to support the ongoing work they do, and we would like to as that a minimum of £5 is donated when taking part. Should you want to donate online you can here:

Our targets:

To CYCLE around Lake Malawi: 1,718km
To ROW the length of Lake Malawi: 560km

WHERE DOES THE FUNDRAISING GO?
The Lilongwe Institute of Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery (LION) is a new purpose-built healthcare facility for treating injured Malawi patients free of charge. Launched in January 2023, the BSSH and the British Association of Hand Therapists (BAHT) will assist LION in the delivery of treatment for elective and traumatic conditions of the hand for five years, collaborating with local staff to run specialist hand clinics and regular hand trauma and elective lists, while promoting sustainability through education and training.
The team comprises a consultant hand surgeon, a surgical trainee and a hand therapist who are all working in their own time for free. All the donations will go directly towards the costs of vital surgical instruments, dressings as well as resources for teaching, which are scarce in this low-resource setting. The funds will also cover the basic travel, accommodation and local transport expenses for the BSSH / BAHT team of volunteers, to enable them to work at the LION Hospital on a daily basis for the duration of the five-year project.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
Anything you can give will be greatly received, and help transform the lives of those who have been affected by hand trauma and disability in a limited resource setting.
THE PULVERTAFT LIONS
The Pulvertaft Lions are a team of members from the Pulvertaft Hand Centre within the Royal Derby Hospital that treats a wide range of conditions of the hand and wrist. They have been doing fantastic work raising funds and contributing to the BOLOS Challenge to circumnavigate Lake Malawi.
As of 9 August 2023, they have completed 1,751.41 kilometres between them through various activities including, cycling, running and sailing.
Don't forget that you can take part in the BOLOS Challenge, every kilometre counts. Well done to the Pulvertaft Lions, such a great effort already!
